Honeycomb is already a great OS for tablets. The recent release of Honeycomb 3.1 added a lot of good little improvements that are much appreciated and are being well recieved by users. Here is a quick rundown of the new improvements:
Resizable Widgets
This newly added feature is just as it sounds, but may not work with every one of your widgets at this time. Widgets can be expanded in every direction (up, down, left, right). Simply use the drag bars to drag a widget to the size that you want and you're good to go.
Improved Multitasking
The Recent Apps list is now expandable, meaning that it is now possible to scroll through your most recently used apps. Touching one of the vertically-displayed thumbnails will take a user back to that app, making multitasking much easier than before.
USB Support for Pointing Devices, Keyboards, Gamepads, and more
This is a huge addition, as Honeycomb 3.1 tablets will now allow users to connect external touchpads, keyboards, gaming devices, ect. The option to add any of the previously mentioned devices further increases the versatility of the current generation of Android Tablets. Giving users more options is never a bad thing. Please note that most of the current PC compatible gaming devices are said to be supported.
Standard App Updates
Many of the core standard apps have been updated, making a good number of these apps more usable and user-friendly. We will not go into many details here, but the Browser, Calendar, Contacts, Email, and Gallery have all seen great little-to-moderate improvements. High-speed wifi connections will also now stay connected while the screen is off. This is a welcome addition to all of the internet music lovers out there, or those who listen to podcasts on a regular basis.
Our brief rundown has skipped over a few details here and there. The important thing to take away here is that these are all great improvements for a ".1" release. If Android developers can keep pumping out nice additions like the ones displayed above, the iPad might soon have to make room at the top of the tablet mountain. In fact, the recent release of the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tab is a good example of this possibility. So watch out Apple, Android is on its way up with its fleet of unique tablets. Oh and did I forget to mention, there are tons reenforcements on the way, many of which will be running Honeycomb 3.1 or later.
